Mr. Miller died in his eighty-second year, and fifty-first of his
ministry. He was much esteemed for his theological learning and
ministerial faithfulness.
PAEISH OF DALSEEF.
Near the south-east corner of the church is the resting-place of
the Kev. John M'Millan, one of the founders of the Reformed
Presbyterian Church. Born at Barncachla, parish of IMinnigaff,
Kirkcudbrightshire, he studied at the University of Edinburgh,
and became. a probationer in November, 1700. In September,
1701, he was ordained to the ministry at Ealmaghie. With strong
sympathies for the Cameronian party, he incurred the displeasure
of his brethren, who, in 1703, proceeded to depose him for "dis-
orderly and schismatical practices." Having refused to vacate his
pulpit, he was summoned before the Commission of Assembly in
June, 1704 ; he then submitted himself, and desired restoration to
the clerical office. As the Commission delayed to revoke the
sentence of deposition, he afterwards renounced the Church's
authority. Joined by a clerical brother and a lay elder, he, in
August, 1743, constituted "The Eeformed Presbytery." Mr.
M'Millan died at Broomhill, parish of Both well, on the 1st
December, 1753, in his eighty- fourth year. In 1840 a monument
to his memory in Dalserf Churchyard was reared by public
subscription.
PAEISH OF DALZIEL.
In the east end of the old parish church is a former burial-place
of the family of Dalziel, ancestors of the Earls of Carnwath. One
of the family tombstones is inscribed thus : —
