John Hutchinson, a magistrate of Paisley, and factor for Lord
Paisley, is celebrated thus : —
" Here lyeth ane faithful • brother • called Johne Hutchesone
Baillie of Paislay who decessit the 22 of Februar, 1625/'
An inscription in the chancel thus celebrates two members of
the old family of Henderson : —
"Heir lyeth Eobert Henderson and Magdalen Hovstovne, 1629 ;
Thomas Henderson and Malie Cochrane."
David Maxwell is thus commemorated : —
" Here lyeth lonete • Delop • spovs • to • David Maxwal • mer-
chand • bvrges of Paisley, qvha decesed 1643."
David Maxwell was chosen treasurer of the burgh in 1635.
His cousin, Jean Knox, only child of William Knox of Selvieland
and his second wife Margaret Maxwell, conveyed the whole to
David Maxwell and his wife Janet Dunlop, on the 12th May, 1642.
William Knox of Selvieland by his first wife had a son, Alexander,
who succeeded to the lands of Selvieland, David Maxwell died
before 1658.
In the chancel a flat stone with the date 1648 is inscribed with
the initials of Eobert Alexander of Blackhouse, Ayrshire, and with
the initials of his two wives, and their respective shields. Robert
Alexander was born in 1604. He had a long and successful career
as a solicitor in Paisley ; he was also town clerk. He was elected
a magistrate in 1647. He purchased Blackhouse in 1648 ; he
afterwards acquired properties in Paisley and elsewhere. He also
purchased properties for his several children for their advancement
in the world. His first wife was Marion Hamilton, daughter of
Claud Hamilton of Blackhole. He married secondly Janet Hen-
derson, daughter of David Henderson of Paisley. His tombstone
was placed by himself to denote his right of sepulture in the abbey
church.
