in which this parish is situated, is known as Kyle, after the name
of the British king.
In the churchyard the tombstone of William Shillilaw, a martyred
Covenanter, is thus inscribed : —
"Here lys William Shillilaw, who was shot at Woodhead by
Lieut. Lauder for his adherence to the word of God and Scotland's
covenanted work of Eeformation, 1685."
A tombstone celebrates the theological learning and pastoral
devotedness of Dr. William Eitchie, one of the ministers of Edin-
burgh, and Professor of Divinity in the university of that city.
He was born at Foulis -Wester, Perthshire, in December, 1747.
In Ms sixteenth year he was elected parish schoolmaster of New-
tyle, Forfarshire. Having studied at the University of St. Andrews,
lie was licensed to preach in 1774. Por some years he travelled
abroad. He was ordained minister of Tarbolton in 1793, and in
1798 was translated to Kilwinning. In 1801 he was elected
Moderator of the General Assembly. In 1802 he was translated
to St. Andrew's Church, Glasgow. He introduced instrumental
music into St. Andrew's church, an act which proved obnoxious
to the Lord Provost, and was condemned by the Presbytery. Dr.
Eitchie was preferred to the High Church, Edinburgh, in 1808.
He was in the following year elected Professor of Divinity. He
died at Tarbolton on the 29th January, 1830, in his eighty-third
year, and the thirty- sixth of his ministry.
