PARISH OF LARGS. 389
December, 1819. He was Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire, a Privy-
Councillor, and on two occasions] Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.
Strongly imbued with the love of chivalry. Lord Eglinton held
a tournament at Eglinton Castle in 1839. When the sons of
Burns finally returned from India he arranged a grand banquet for
their reception, at which he appropriately presided. He died on
the 4th October, 1861.
These quaint lines commemorate John Cunningham, who died
on the 15th January, 1712, aged nineteen : —
" Stop, pilgrims, as you go by.
Behold my early destiny;
Before I was twentie years old
Death upon me did take hold ;
This stone stands witness at my head,
"Which makes my parents' heart to bleed."
PAEISH OF KIEKMICHAEL.
In the parish churchyard a tombstone commemorates Gilbert
M'Adam, a martyr for the Covenant. In 1685 he was taken
prisoner and carried to Dumfries on a charge of Nonconformity,
but was Hberated on a heavy caution. Not long after he was again
apprehended, and on refusing the oath of supremacy was banished
to the Plantations. He effected his escape, but was found by a
body of militia while conducting a prayer meeting in this parish.
On attempting to escape by a window he was shot dead.
M'Adam's tombstone was renewed in 1829.
PAEISH OF LAEGS.
A small eminence, known as the Castle Hill, bears traces of an
encampment connected with the battle of Largs, fought in 1263.
