WIGTONSHIRE.
PARISH OF GLASSEETON.
Within tlie old church at Kirkmaiden is the burial-place of the
family of Sir William Maxwell, Bart., of Monreith. Several mem-
bers of the family who have attained distinction are interred in the
vault.
PAEISH OF LESWALT.
In 1851 the inhabitants of the district erected a monument to
Sir Andrew Agnew, Bart., of Lochnaw, who died in 1850. (See
ante) It is placed on " the Tower of Craigoch," a beautiful green
hill in the form of a cone, commanding an extensive view of the
Irish coast.
PARISH OF OLD LUCE.
The Abbey of Glenluce was founded in 1190, and planted with
Cistercian monks. At the Reformation, Thomas Hay was appointed
commendator. He subsequently acquired a portion of the abbey
lands, which are still possessed by his descendants. His represen-
tative, Sir John Charles Dalrymple Hay, Bart., of Park Place, has
a burying-place in the abbey churchyard.
