312 DUMFRIESSHIRE.
But all the children round and round
In her a foster-parent found ;
Then- eggs she boiled, their cloaks she dried,
And soothed and coaxed them when they cried ;
And when the burn ran wide and wild,
She ferried over every child.
Proficient in her loving heart,
The fremit had a mother's heart.
A gentleness and love that's higher,
And blessed was ]\Iary's fire.
Disturb not, but respect this stone,
Eaised to her memory by one
Who even in death would Mary shield,
Hannah of Bayhall, Huddersfield."
PAEISH OF KIEKMICHAEL.
A large stone, named "sax corses" (six corpses), denotes the
burial-place of Sir Hugh de Morland and five of his followers, who
were slain by Sir William Wallace and his followers, who sallied
forth to attack them from the Tor-Linn, a glen of natural oak in
the vicinity.
In Garrel Churchyard is the ancient burying-ground of
the Kirkpatricks, Barons of Kirkmichael. A plain tombstone
commemorates the great-grandmother and great-grandfather of
Eugenie, ex-Empress of the French. There is the following
inscription : —

Glenkiln, died 12th Octr., 1746, aged 68 years.
