PAEISH OF GLENCAIRN. 305
PAEISH OF GLENCAIEK
In the cliurcliyard three tombstones commemorate four cove-
nanters who were in 1685 shot by order of Colonel Douglas and
Lieutenant Livingston. The inscriptions are as follow : —
On John Gibson.
" My soul's in heaven, here's my dust,
By wicked sentence, and unjust,
Shot dead, convicted of no crime
But non-compliance with the time,
When Babel's bastards had command,
And monstrous tyrants ruled the land."
On James Bennoch.
" Here lies a monument of Popish wrath ;
Because I'm not perjur'd, I'm shot to death
By cruel hands ; men, godless and unjust,
Did sacrifice my blood to Babel's lust."
On Eobert Edgar and Eobert Mitchell.
" Halt, passenger, tell if thou ever saw
Men shot to death without process of law ;
We two, of four who in this churchyard ly,
Thus felt the rage of Popish tyranny."
On a portion of rising ground near the village of Minnyhive a
monument was reared in 1828 in commemoration of James
Eenwick, the last of Scottish martyrs. This celebrated field-
preacher was born on the 15th February, 1662. Having prose-
cuted his studies at the LTniversity of Edinburgh, he obtaiaed
in 1682 licence in Holland as a preacher of the Presbyterian
Church. In January, 1683, he proclaimed the famous "Lanark
Declaration," and commenced a course of itinerant preaching. By
the Privy Council he was denounced a traitor, and his adher-
ents pronounced rebels. He was hotly pursued by the Govern-
