PARISH OF WEST LINTON. 263
Nor can the sons in youth though they attend
Then- fathers dear from dreadful death defend.
Trust in Clod, and let His Word divine
Dwell in your hearts and on your conduct shine.
He soon shall lead thee far above all strife,
Where in His favour is unfadinfj life."
PAEISH or KIRKUED.
On a tombstone in the churchyard William Sibbald is thus
celebrated : —
" Old William Sibbald's conversation
Was a bright pattern in his station,
Tor moral virtuous pietie.
He did excel in his degree ;
He never any did distress,
Nor any him by law process.
All his affairs he managed so
That few could say they did them know;
For temperance there was few such,
None e'er could say he drank too much.
He helped many in their need,
He ready was the poor to feed.
And now he reaps the fruits in store
Of heaven's joys for evermore."
PAEISH OF WEST LINTON.

" Laird Gifford," has afforded a specimen of his skill in a figure
of his wife placed on the top of the village well. Lately renovated,
the well bears this inscription : —
