254 ROXBURGHSHIRE.
An inscription runs thus : —
" Heir lies ane honourabil man Andro Pringil, feuar of Galloshiels
qulia decessit ye 28 of February, An. Dom. 1585."
A marble slab, eight feet by four, covers the family tomb of the
Scotts of Gala. The slab seems to have been an ancient altar-
piece.
In the sixth chapel from the west is the following inscription : —
" Niniani : Eatine
Thome: Pauli : Cuthbt.
te : s : Petre : Pietigin."
In the chapel an elegant monument denotes the grave of the
Eev. David Fletcher, minister of tlie parish and Bishop of Argyll,
Son of Andrew Fletcher, merchant, Dundee, he was educated at
St. Andrews University. In 1635 he was elected minister of St.
Giles' Church, Edinburgh ; he was deposed by the Commission of
Assembly in 1639, for declining the Glasgow Assembly of the pre-
ceding year, and defending the Service Book. Eeinstated as a
minister, he was, in 1641, translated to Melrose. He was pro-
moted to the Bishopric of Argyll in 1662, but continued to discharge
his parochial duties. He died in March, 1665. He bequeathed
funds to build a school-house. His monument was erected by his
son William, an eminent lawyer.
In the portion of the abbey known as the Ministers' burying-
place are interred the Eev. John Knox, minister of the parish, and
grand-nephew of theEeformer, who died in 1623, aged sixty-eight ;
and the Eev. Adam Milne, minister of Melrose, and author of " A
Description of the Parish," who died 8th June, 1747, in his sixty-
seventh year and the thirty-seventh of his ministry.
In the parish churchyard which surrounds the abbey, the tomb-
stones are chiefly of modern date. Of these the oldest is thus
inscribed : —
" Heir lyes James Edgar, who died anno 1623."
Near the door of the south transept a tombstone is engraved
