PAEISH OF AYTOK
In the churchyard a tombstone denotes the grave of the Rev.
George Tough, minister of the parish, an ingenious mechanician.
He constructed an Orrery upon an improved plan which he pre-
sented to George IV. on his visit to Edinburgh in 1822. Mr.
Tough was a native of Edinburgh, was licensed in 1798, and
ordained to the ministry at Berwick-on-Tweed in 1802. He was
translated to Beath, Fifeshire, in 1812, and to Ayton in 1814. He
died on the 29th July, 1842, aged sixty-eight.
A tombstone contains these rhymes : —
" Though distant climes divide us here below ;
Though far apart we moulder into dust ;
Hope says, and gently dries the tears of woe.
You all shall meet to mingle with the dust."
PAEISH OF BUNKLE.
In Preston churchyard, in this parish, a tombstone presents the
following inscription : —
" To the memory of William Carlisle, who died at Blanerne, on
the 16th of September, 1831, aged 108 years ; and Catherine
Mitchell, his wife, who died on the 10th April, 1818, aged eighty-
two years."
Carlisle was coachman to Mr. Lumsden, of Blanerne. In
Blanerne House is preserved his portrait, painted by Thomson of
Duddingston, when he was one hundred years old.
