18G8, aged twenty-five, and Commander Edward Hay, E.N., who was
killed in New Zealand, 30th April, 1864, aged twenty-nine.
In the churchyard a monument commemorates the Eev. Andrew
Stevenson, minister of the parish. This reverend divine was born
on the 29th October, 1588. For thirty years he held office as
Eegent or Professor of Philosophy in the University of Edinburgh.
In 1639 he was admitted to the ministry at Dunbar. He died on
the 13th December, 1664, in the seventy-seventh year of his age,
and twenty-fifth of his ministry. His tombstone is thus in-
scribed : —
" 'EyetptTat YlveviaaTiKOv.
" Sacris hie reconditis exuviis clarissimi & charissimi patris sui
niagistri Andrete Stephanidffi, primum per annos 30, in academia
Edinensi philologise & philosophiee professoris celeberrimi ; annos
dein 25, ecclesiaj Barodunensis pastoris fidelissimi (cui micare
incepit diluculum nostrum breve Octob. 29, 1588. Lux vero meri-
dianaa^terna affulgere Decemb. 13, 1664). Archibaldus Stephanides
medicinte doctor liberorum octo, (quorum M. Thomas Jacobus,
Joneta, a pedibus patris requiescunt) solus cum sorore Aguesia
superstes, cippum hunc qualencunque L.L.M.D.C. Q.
" Ecce satus "ETiipavoj situs hie ; qui lustra peregit
Undena, officiis verna corona suis :
Spiueta hie tetrici perrupei'at aspra Lycsei
Junior : ast vegetuni suada suprema senem
Extulit. ^ternam adspiras quicunque coronam,
Vita hujus vitte norma sit apta tua?."
In the churchyard a tombstone is thus inscribed : —
" Thomas Eeid, 1827."
" In memory of his grandfather, Magnus Eeid, who died May,
1786, aged one hundred and fourteen years. Also his sister, Janet
Eeid, who died August 9th, 1800, aged nineteen years. Also his
father, Thomas Eeid, who died January 8th, 1809, aged eighty-six
years. Also his uncle, Cumberland Eeid, who died July 6th, 1818,
aged one hundred and five years. Also two of his children who
died in their infancy."
According to tradition, Magnus Eeid began business as a
travelling chapman about the age of eighty, and followed this
calliuiT till within two months of his decease.
