quitted the cure on account of the Test in December, 1G81. His
merits are thus depicted in Latin verse : —
" Tumulo hoc reliquire sunt sacrae reconditse
Viri integerrimi Patersoni, optimi
Pastoris, omi laude fulgentissimi ;
Pro veritate proque conscientia,
Pro pace moribusque Sanctis, phirima
Qui fecit intrepide, tulitque fortiter.
At nunc hiboribus exsohito ergastuli,
Datum fruisci non corona marcida."
In Nungate Chapel-yard George Wilson has the following
elegy :—
" Good people, know here lies a youth (whose name
Engraven here) was one of a good fame ;
Opposing vice, of quick engine was he,
Eetaining virtue, wisdom, constancy ;
Grave, humble, pleasant, sober, meek, and chaste,
Extolling mercy, pious to the last.
And now until the trumpet last shall sound.
In quiet grave, his bones here may be found ;
Likewise his soul, up in the heaven's high
Solemnly joins with saints sweet melody :
therefore study all his steps to trace.
Now when he's gone, the standard of his race.
He died August 6, 1702. His age fourteen years."
PAEISH OF ABEPtLADY.
Two aisles adjoining the parish church are used for interment
by the Earl of Wemyss and Lord Elibank. In the Elibank or
Ballencrieff aisle an elegant marble monument celebrates the
virtues of Maria Margaretta, wife of Patrick, fifth Lord Elibank,
who died in June, 1762. A long inscription in elegant
Latin was composed by her husband, who was celebrated for his
