PARISH OF LASSWADE. 173
" Farewell, all joy, since hope gives nothing new, .
But like a sieve lets every pleasure through ;
Farewell, ye rural plains, for she is gone,
To whose lov'd memory I erect tliis stone."
" Before this youth to manhood grew,
Of which there none need boast.
With length of days before his view,
He yielded up the ghost."
At Dryden a monument of curious workmanship commemorates
James Lockhart Wishart, of Lee and Carnwath. The tomb, which
is enclosed with a parapet and iron railing, is eight feet in height
and 200 feet in circumference. There is an octagonal column
twelve feet high and nine broad ; it supports a cradle about eight
feet long and four broad. On the top is a lantern surmounted by
a groined arch, supported by four pillars, twenty feet in height and
five feet square. The key-stone of the arch terminates in a globe
suspended over the cradle. On the south side of the column are
the armorial bearings of the Lee family, in which is an emblem of
the casket which contained the heart of King Eobert the Bruce,
borne by Sir James Douglas, founder of the family, to the Holy

On the east side of the column a marble slab bears the following
inscription : —
" James Lockhart Wishart, of Lee and Carnwath, Lord of the
Bedchamber to his Imperial Majesty Joseph the Second, Emperor
of Germany, Knight of the Order of Maria Teresa, Count of the
Holy Eoman Empire, and General of the Imperial, Eoyal, and
Apostolical Armies, died at Pisa, in Italy, Vlth February,
MDCCXC, in the LXIVth year of his age."
Between the column and the railing on the east side, beneath a,
large stone, rest the remains of James, Count Lockhart, of Lee
and Carnwath, son of General Count Lockhart; he died in 1802.
On the west side of the column a marble slab is inscribed
thus : —
"Jacobus Lockhart Wishart, de Lee et Carnwath, Josephi se-
