By a marble slab is commemorated John, fifteenth Earl of
Glencairn, who died at Coats, near Edinburgh, on the 29th
September, 1796, aged forty-six. At his death the earldom became
dormant. His lordship's elder brother, who died in 1791, was a
warm patron of the poet Burns.
A monument celebrates the ministerial faithfulness of the Eev.
Neil McVicar, Minister of St. Cuthbert's, who died on the 29tli
January, 1747, in the seventy-fifth year of his age and forty-eighth
of his ministry. Erom the office of military chaplain at Eort
William, Mr. McVicar was transferred to St. Cuthbert's church in
May, 1707; he was appointed almoner to the king in 1729. An
anecdote of him is related in connection with Prince Charles
Edward's triumphal entry into Edinburgh after the battle of Pres-
tonpans. On the following Sunday he preached to a promiscuous
audience, many of whom were opposed to the reigning family.
During prayer he expressed the petition that " the young man
recently come amongst us in search of an earthly crown may soon
obtain what is far better, a heavenly one."
A tombstone marks the burial-place of Major-General Mark
Napier, who died on the 10th June, 1809. He was son of Francis,
fifth Lord Napier, by his wife Lady Henrietta Hope, third daughter
of the first Earl of Hopetoim. His family are interred in the
churchyard.
A monument denotes the burial-place of William Jobson of
Lochore, who died on the 19th December, 1822, and of his wife,
Mrs. Rachel Stuart, who died on the 15th August, 1863. Jane,
