PREFACE.
Ill
questions from his collections for The Scottish National
Dictionary; to Professor Dickins of Leeds, who read a
proof of the text and introduction and made valuable
criticisms and suggestions; and not least to Dr W. R.
Cunningham, University Librarian, who put himself to
an infinity of trouble in connection with my needs, and
did it all as if he liked it. The issue of the volume was
greatly expedited by the assistance of my sister, Miss A.
Girvan, in the preparation of the text for the printers ;
nor can I omit to mention here my sense of obligation to
the staff of Glasgow University Library, and to Dr R. F.
Patterson, General Editor of the Society’s publications,
whose patience I must have tried often and grievously.
