Than Wallace yus began to dite in haift
yow revar king yow chargis me throw cace
That I fuld cum and put me in yi grace.
Gif I ganeftand yow hechtis to hyng me.
I avow to god and euer I may tak ye
yow falbe hangit ane exempill to gif
To king of reift als lang as I may l[eif.]
yow profferis me of yi wagis to haif.
I ye defy power and all the laif
That helpis ye heir of yi fals nacionne
Will god yow fall be put of yis regionne [39°]
Or dee yairfore contrar yocht yow had fworne
yow fall vs fe or ix. houris to morne
Battell to gif mawgre of all yi kyn
For falfly yow fekis our realme within
This writ he gaif to ye heraldis but mare
And gude reward he gart deliuer yame yare
Bot Jop knew weill ye fqwyar 3ong fchir hew
And tald Wallace for he vves euer trew.
He yame commandit yat yai fuld fone him tak
Him felf began fair accufing to mak [400]
Squyar he faid fen yow has fen3eit armes
On ye fall fall fumpart of yir harmes
Exempill to gif to all yi fals nacionne
Wpone ane hill he gart fet him dovne [58 r]
Straik of his hede or he wald forther go.
To ye herrald faid fyne withoutin ho
[For thow art fals to armis and manefworne.]
[Throw thy cheikis thy toung falbe out fchorne.]
[Quhen that was done, than to the thrid faid he,]
Armes to iuge yow fall neuer graithly fe [410]
He gart ane fmyth with his turcace richt yair.
Pull out his ene fyne gaif yame leif to fayr
To 3our fals king yi fallow fall ye lede.
With my aufner turs him his nevois hede
Thus fair I dreid ye king and all his boift
His dum fallow led him vnto yair oift.
Quhen king Edward his heraldis yus has fene
In propir ire he wox neir wod for tene
That he nocht wift on quhat wife him to wreik
For forow al maift ane word he culd nocht fpeke [42°]
