William Fyfe Senior and William Knox, at Fairlie, Ayrshire. Fyfe (or Fife) (1786-1865) was the founder of Fife's boatyard in 1812. He lived in North Row (now Bay Street), in Fairlie. He had started building boats for his own use, but it soon developed into a successful business. Knox (1787-1870) was also originally from Kilbirnie and was a close friend of the Fifes; his wife was Margaret Fyfe, William, Sr.’s sister. He was a carpenter, so he probably came over to Fairlie to work in the boatyard, but latterly he became the village postmaster and kept a grocer’s shop.
