Hugh Lyon Tennent and William Boyd with P. Fisher's and Jas. Gray's boats, probably at Fairlie, Ayrshire. James Gray (1799-1869), whose fishing boat is pictured here, was a herring fisher. He lived at Burnfoot, Fairlie. In the background of this picture is Captain George Hay’s house. William Boyd (1818-1884) was another gardner in the Fairlie area. His parents, William (1787-1877), a labourer and gardener, and Margaret Dickie lived in Midrow, and when William married—Margaret Houston, from Largs—he moved to Burnfoot. The family then moved to the Isle of Cumbrae, where William set himself up as a market gardener. By the 1880s, the Boyds of Midrow (William’s brother, David, and his family) were famous for their model yachts.
