continent remains untraversed and
unknown. From Kaiser Wilhelm Land
to Coat’s Land it is an uncertainly-
dotted coast-line, except for the
Enderby-Kemp tintings.
Three main reasons have left this
stretch almost entirely unexplored:
It is a land of mist, the pack ice
surrounding it proving almost channel¬
less, except to the fortunate,
encountering freakish drifts ; there is
no convenient base of approach ; its
coast-line bulges far out into the Circle,
thereby almost trebling the distance
between any point of disembarkation
and the Pole, when compared with the
comparatively short route from South
Victoria Land.
Hitherto, because of that unattained
Pole, the opposite quadrants have
attracted the explorer. (Shackleton
in his last voyage is an exception.)
