Lands Between still stretch their
leagues of terra incognita to challenge
the venturous.
Arctica unexplored possesses a giant
triangle, not quite isosceles, with a
line reaching from the Liakhoffs to
Point Barrow for its base and the
North Pole for apex. De Long’s
furthest north in 1881 has been almost
the only incursion of the explorer upon
it. Its white allure is fringed with
moving ice-sheets, east of which the
Fram once scraped in its historic
drift. Its survey and exploration
present problems which I cannot but
believe will be overcome, though
certainly neither by athletes nor special
correspondents. Amongst explorers
the Siberian coast is held to be the
best base of approach and there are
