William Creech (1745-1815)
William Creech was an Edinburgh bookseller and magistrate. A sociable and well-known member of Edinburgh literary society, he hosted book auctions and weekly breakfasts at his shop, ‘Creech’s levees’.
Creech published works by Hugh Blair, Robert Fergusson, William Cullen and Robert Burns. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, booksellers often printed and published books as well as selling them.
Writer of satires and essays
Creech also wrote anonymous satires of modern manners for the Edinburgh newspapers, which he later published as a collection.
Creech was the publisher of the ‘Statistical Account of Scotland’, which included an essay by Creech, entitled ‘Account of the Manners and Customs of Scotland’.
