John Ainslie (1745-1828)
John Ainslie was a cartographer, or mapmaker, and land surveyor from Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders.
One of his notable achievements was preparing a map of Scotland in the 1780s, which demonstrated significant improvements in mapping the coastal outline of Scotland. It is the first map on which the Great Glen, Skye, Mull and Islay are shown with relative accuracy.
