Miscellaneous.
A number of other works for the relief of unemployment, costing about £350,000, were
undertaken in the five years 1929-1934. The majority of these works were carried out
since 1932. They consisted, principally, of minor works for the benefit of the poorer
rural areas of the State, such as accommodation roads, clearance of drains, erection of
small bridges, turbary development, fishery slipways, etc.
In 1934-35, the expenditure on works of this character will amount to, approximately,
£180,000. Further expenditure the amount of which has not yet been determined is
contemplated during i935-36.
With the exception of some trivial local contributions, the entire cost of these works
is borne from State funds.
Tabour charges account for about 85 % of the expenditure on these works.

In addition to the schemes of public works which have been described in detail above,
a number of schemes involving considerable expenditure and providing a appreciable
measure of relief for the prevailing unemployment have been undertaken, in pursuance of
the Government’s policy, for the development of the peat resources of the country, the
production of sugar from sugar beet, and the production of industrial alcohol.
