John Francis Campbell
DescriptionA selection of illustrated manuscript journals, watercolour paintings and sketches by John Francis Campbell of Islay (Iain Òg Ìle, 1821 to 1885). Campbell was a Gaelic scholar, folklorist, artist, scientist and traveller. The volumes document his travels around the world, including the Scottish Highlands, Wales, England, Scandinavia, North America and Japan.

    John Francis Campbell's collection of printed books is also in the National Library of Scotland. The majority of his books concern Highland folklore and other Scottish Gaelic and Celtic themes. Many of the books were annotated by Campbell or have letters inserted.
