I think that many are capable
of being improved and it is
certainly possible to get far
better prints from all than the
Japanese photographs have
produced. I must confess that
nothing ever took such a hold
on me as photography has done.
If I felt free to follow my in
clination I should give my
whole time to it!
I have very greatly enjoyed this
three months in Soul on a visit
to my friend Mr McLeavy
Brown Chief Commissioner of
Customs and now by strange
set of circumstances practically
Dictator of the Kingdom. The fasci
nation of being behind the scenes
in an Oriental Kingdom is great
and it has been a matter of very
deep interest to watch the slow
unfolding of Russian policy of
which the British Consul General
thinks the Foreign office is entirely
unaware and will only become
aware when it is too late to check
it.
This is the end of 6 months in Seoul
and 11 in Korea. I have so many
friends and interests here and
have met with such extraordi
nary kindness that I feel very
loth to leave it. Indeed I am
