5.     Vaccination in municipalities.—In Calcutta 32,187 operations were
performed during the year against 27,898 during 1910-11.

In mufassal municipalities, dispensaries, etc., the number of cases
amounted to 117,042 against 114,739 during the previous year. The
average number of persons vaccinated by a vaccinator in mufassal munici-
palities was 670 against 650, while that done by licensed, District Board and
all other paid vaccinators was 1,166. 2,040 and 795 against 1,159, 2,161 and
809, respectively, of the previous year.

6.     Protection afforded to infants.—During the year under report out of
1,773,924 the estimated number of infants under one year available for
vaccination, 1,043,179, that is 588.06 per thousand, were successfully
vaccinated against 600.50 during the previous year. In the Balasore district
the number of recorded protected infants exceeds the available population.
This is accounted for by the inclusion of some children above 1 year of
age in the returns by miscalculation of age on the part of vaccinators and
guardians of children who are for the most part illiterate.

In 25 districts against 24 of 1910-11 the protection was over 500 per
mille, while in 8 districts, viz., Hooghly, Darjeeling, 24-Parganas, Gaya,
Birbhum, Howrah, Patna and Shahabad, it was below this standard.

The protection afforded to infants in municipalities is shown in
Appendix VII attached to the report. It will be seen that 802.91 per mille
of the surviving infant population was protected during the past year against
773.68 per mille during 1910-11. The attention of Civil Surgeons has, as
usual, been drawn to their responsibility in the matter of infant vaccination
in towns wherever the protection is inadequate.

7.     Recess work.—During the recess or non-working season of 1911-12
114,809 operations were performed in connection with small-pox epidemics
against 141.142 in the year before.

8.     Six-puncture vaccination.—The total number of successful primary
and revaccination operations in six points was 1,019,177 and 9,821,
respectively, against 842,895 and 12,305 during 1910-11. The increase in
six-point primary vaccination is satisfactory.

9.     Factory and Tea Garden vaccination.—During 1911-12 the total
numer of primary and revaccination operations performed in factories and
tea gardens in Bengal was 2,232 and 652, respectively, against 3,602 and
260 in the previous year.

10.     Cost of contribution towards vaccination.—The total cost of vaccin-
ation during the year was Rs. 1,99,666-3-11 against Rs. 1,90,937-1-10 in the
previous year. The average cost of each successful case of vaccination was
1 anna and 7 pie against 1 anna and 6 pie of the previous year.

The District Boards. Native States, and cantonments and dispensaries,
etc., contributed Rs. 8,750-14-4, Rs. 369-9-5 and Rs. 164-13-6, against
Rs. 9,215-12-4. Rs. 287-10-7 and Rs. 238-6-2, respectively, in the previous
year.

11.     Diagram illustrating death-rates from small-pox and degree of protec-
tion afforded.—The diagram facing this page illustrates the death-rates from
small-pox in each district, the proportion of population protected against
the disease by vaccination during the past seven years, being shown side
by side.

12.     Deaths from small-pox.—During the past year the total number
of deaths from small-pox in the Province was 3,818 only against 6,174 during
1910-11 and 25,582 during 1909-10, the ratio of deaths per thousand of the
population being .07 against .11 and .50, respectively, during the two preceding
years. The largest number of deaths was recorded in the districts of
Bhagalpur (921), Purnea (478) and Balasore (211); while the districts of
Manbhum, Singhbhum. Palamau, Cuttack, Puri and Hazaribagh show only
1, 3, 6, 6, 7 and 9 deaths, respectively, from this cause.

13.     Animal Vaccine Depot.—The number of calves vaccinated in the
Calcutta Animal Vaccine Depôt during the year was 1,973 and the quantity
of lymph manufactured was 568,113 grains against 2,194 calves and 608,916
grains of lymph during the previous year.

14.     Different methods of Vaccination.—During 1911-12. 44,062 primary
operations were performed with lymph direct from calves, 1,480,476 with
