tected by the Government agency. It was extended to the four remaining
thanas of Gya, and to six thanas of Balasore: some vaccination operations were
also performed for the first time to suppress local outbreaks of small-pox
in Sarun and Chumparun.

A useful map, illustrating the extent to which vaccination has been intro-
duced in Bengal, accompanies the Sanitary Commissioner's notes. From this
it appears that the practice of inoculation is prohibited in all parts of Bengal,
except the rural portions of the Durbhunga, Mozufferpore, Sarun, and Chum-
parun districts in Behar, a small portion of Balasore in Orissa, and the Cox's
Bazar subdivision in Chittagong.

Favourable remarks have been recorded by Dr. Gregg concerning the good
work done by Drs. Wood, Gupta, and Waddell and Assistant Surgeon Narendra
Nath Gupta. Mention has also been made of the services rendered by Assistant
Surgeons Umesh Chunder Ghose, Preumber Nath Mitter, Ashutosh Law, and
Moulvie Tajamul Hossain, Deputy Superintendents of Vaccination. The obser-
vations will be communicated to the Appointment Department.
