Ruthgurah Bazaar.

Ruthgurah Bazaar.—Sub-Assistant Surgeon Bama Churn Chatterjee reports that
four inoculators were taught vaccination, and two of them employed at Rs. 5 a month in the
villages in the vicinity of Ruthgurah bazaar. Their operations were closely watched by
the sub-assistant surgeon. The people of that locality are opposed to vaccination, and the
vaccinators foster their prejudices. Inoculation has not been practised in the locality for
four or five years. " Small-pox prevailed sporadically in two or three villages. Vaccination
was introduced in the villages so effected, and the disease was thereby stopped."

Number vaccinated.

The number vaccinated was 351 against 595, and the percentage of success 98
against 96.

Hooghly district.
Number vaccinated.

Hooghly District.—This district is within the Metropolitan circles, and has been well
vaccinated, with the exception of the thannahs of Kistonuggur, Huripal and Duneakhalee
to the west, and Balagurh to the north which have not been as yet thoroughly done.
Mr. Thompson reports on vaccination within the bounds of the Hooghly municipality.
One vaccinator is employed by the municipality at Rs. 10. His proceedings are supervised
by the civil surgeon and sub-assistant surgeon. The people are favorable, and inoculation
is not now practised. A few cases of small-pox occurred in April and May, but the unpro-
tected were vaccinated, and the disease did not spread. 2,285 persons were vaccinated, with
a percentage of success of 91.08 against 2,037, and 90.1 in 1871-72. No vaccination was
performed in connection with any of the branch dispensaries.

Howrah district
Number vaccinated.

Howrah.—Dr. Elliot reports that the municipality engages a vaccinator on Rs. 10
during the vaccine season. He vaccinates within municipal limits, and his work is supervised
by the civil surgeon. No opposition is experienced, and inoculation is not practised. Only
ten deaths from small-pox were reported in the district. 1,615 persons were vaccinated,
with a percentage of success of 97.67 against 2,155, and in 1871-72, no vaccinator is attached
to the dispensary at Ooterparah. The vaccinator abolished in 1869 is said to have carried
on vaccination on his own account.

Ex-inoculator.

Serampore.—Dr. Greene reports that a vaccinator is employed by the municipality during
six months on a salary of Rs. 10. He works within municipal limits, and his services are
eagerly sought by the natives. The civil surgeon inspected the work frequently. Arm-to-
arm vaccinations were carried on throughout the season. 858 persons were vaccinated, with a
percentage of success of 100 against 894, and- 99.7 in 1871-72. The prevalence of fever
interfered much with the work; one of the three inoculators instructed last year brought a
child into the station to obtain a supply of lymph. Dr. Greene has not heard of his sub-
sequent proceedings. No small-pox prevailed. Six persons were vaccinated by the native
doctor at Bundeepore.
