Increase and its
causes.

From the above it will be observed that there is a very large increase ; indeed the num-
bers are higher than any of the previous years since the formation of these circles, and
even higher than the aggregate of the two previous years. I ascribe this happy and fortunate
result,

1st.—To the increased establishment given last year.

2nd.—To the good-will and heart with which the vaccinators all worked.

3rd.—To the field, viz. Nuddea and 24-Pergunnahs, being healthy though the divisions
that have returned the largest numbers worked in the district of Burdwan.

4 th.—Less opposition in Nuddea. There is increase in all the three circles shewing
that the three deputy superintendents and the vaccinators have all done their best.

Deputy Superinten-
dents.

The deputy superintendent of the first circle, Baboo Ramsoonder Ghose, is a very ener-
getic and industrious officer. He works very hard in the vaccinating season, contenting
himself with one meal a day. He looks after his men constantly, and keeps them in capital
order. In his circle there is an increase of 55,306.

The deputy superintendent of the second circle, Baboo Buddy Nath Brummo, is a very
careful and painstaking officer. He is a model of neatness in keeping his books and diaries.
He keeps his men in excellent order. He always strives after perfection and looks more
to the quality than to the quantity of work. In his circle there is an increase of 57,270.

The deputy superintendent of the third circle, Baboo Jadubchunder Ghose, has again
placed his circle first in the list. At the commencement of the season his men were very
unfortunate and turned out very little work for reasons assigned before. But his usual tact,
energy, perseverance and his wonderful command over his men prevailed at last and
surmounted the difficulties. He has been very highly spoken of by Drs. Charles, Powell and
Cayley, and I can only add my feeble testimony. He is naturally fitted for the post he so
worthily occupies in overcoming opposition and prejudice and persuading an ignorant and
obstinate people to take vaccination. He has received the thanks of Government on two
or three occasions. He holds the mutiny medal and several first-class testimonials from
his superior officers. I bring these facts prominently forward in this report in the hope that
his services may receive that public recognition which they eminently deserve.

Tours of the super-
intendent.

13. Tours of the Superintendent.—I took charge on 26th October 1872, and on the
28th set out to inspect in thannah Bishtoopore. In November I inspected in thannah
Atcheepore, in 24-Pergunnahs; in thannah Shibpore, in Howrah; and in thannahs
Chooadangah, Damoorhooda and Alumdangah in Nuddea. In December I had to proceed
to Dacca to inspect the working of the new vaccine circle. I have already submitted a
