9. Second Metropolitan Circle.—To the deputy superintendent of this circle, Baboo
Buddynath Brummo, were assigned eight unprotected thannahs in the north-west of
Nuddea, viz. Damoorhooda, Chupra, Nakasheeparah, Kalligunge, Teyhutto, Maharpore,
Gangnee, and Kurreempore with an area of 1079 square miles. The number of villages
in these eight thannahs, is 924 according to the census report, but the vaccinator's returns
and registers make it out to be 949. This discrepancy is to be accounted for by supposing
that two parrahs of a village separated by a khal or rivulet or wide fields, might have
been returned as two distinct villages. I can confirm this statement from personal observa-
tion in the course of my tours of inspection. The population of these eight thannahs
is 5,28,254. The vaccinators have worked in 924 villages, and vaccinated 73,711 persons.
Now, assuming that the number of births per 1,000 to be 30 per annum, we would have
15,920 children born annually in a population of 5,28,254. This number would have to
be doubled, as inoculation has been prohibited in the Nuddea district for the last two years,
viz. 31,840. Subtract this from 73,711, there would be left 41,871, a very large number
which would represent the unprotected adult and juvenile population who have been pro-
tected in the last season.

From the above it will be seen that these eight thannahs have been thoroughly pro-
tected. The total area of country vaccinated by the second circle is 1,079 square miles. The
number of villages visited is 946, and the total number vaccinated is 74,666, of which 74,107
were successful. The deputy superintendent inspected 55,986 cases or 75 per cent.

10. The third Metropolitan Circle.—To the deputy superintendent of this circle,
Baboo Jadubchunder Ghose, were assigned four thannahs in the 24-Pergunnahs, viz. Bishtoo-
pore, Atcheepore,; Daveepore and Diamond Harbour,; two thannahs (Shibpore and Dom-
joor) in Howrah, three thannahs in Hooghly, viz., Khanacool, Ghattal and Chunderkonah.
But these three had to be abandoned because the first was very sickly, and the two last were
made over to Midnapore ; and thannahs Goghat, Jehanabad and Roynah in Burdwan, were
taken in stead. The area of these thannahs is 750 square miles. In the middle of the
season one " gang" had to be removed from Howrah to Culnah on account of sickness. They
worked in portions of thannahs Gangooreah, Culnah, Mantessur and Poorbusthullee, these
four being contiguous. This would give a larger area of operations. In these thannahs
the vaccinators visited 1185 villages and vaccinated 1,08,582 persons. To form a more
correct idea of protection afforded by vaccination to the thannahs assigned to the third
metropolitan circle, it would be necessary to take up thannah by thannah and the follow-
ing table will shew it at a glance:—
