                                                                                                                                                            J. T. DALY,
                                                                                                                                                   Civil Surgeon, Shillong.

                                                    APPENDIX B.

Special Report on experiments with calf lymph mixed with glycerine in tubes and lanoline lymph
of various strengths in bottles and boxes, written by Surgeon-Major R. N. Campbell,
M.B.

1.  The first supply was received about the end of February, and vaccinations wore performed on
the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th of March.

2.  The results were fairly satisfactory with the glycerine, i.e., 12 cases successful out of 16 cases
vaccinated, equal to 75 per cent. successful, but this was not so satisfactory as previous supplies had
been, where not 5 per cent. were failures.

3.  The lanoline lymph of strength 1 to 4½, 1 to 6½, and 1 to 10 were used in the same villages on
the same dates as the glycerine, but not one case was successful, though in all 57 cases were operated
on, i.e., 19 cases with each specimen. These preparations were in small wooden boxes with ill-fitting
lids, and it is probable the exposure may have affected their efficacy.

4.  The maximum temperature was 76° and the minimum 58°.

5.  The second supply for experiment was received about 12th March, and experiment made on
14th to 18th March.

6.  The following table shows the results—

7.  These second experiments show that there was but little difference in the efficacy of the
glycerine and lanoline lymph, and that all were bad, for even the two successful cases recorded as such
with glycerine were not satisfactory.

8.  These cases were all vaccinated and inspected by me, so that there can be no doubt as to the
result.

9.  In all 1 vaccinated 40 cases with glycerine and 99 with lanoline and only 14 glycerine and
no cases of lanoline were successful.

This compares very badly with the work in January and February, when I vaccinated and inspected
many hundred in which less than 5 per cent. were unsuccessful.

10.  I am of opinion that the lymph taken from the calves in Shillong in March cannot have been
as good as that taken formerly, and for this reason the experiments with lanoline and glycerine lymph
are not trustworthy, and would suggest that further trials be made next season.

The temperature was never high, so that this cannot be stated as the cause of failure.

                                                                                                R. NEIL CAMPBELL, M.B.
