Combined expenditure on
vaccination in the Khalsa and
Feudatory States.

22. The total amount expended in both the Khalsa and Feudatory States
amounted to Rs. 49,742-10-8, or Rs. 1,184-2-6 less than
in the previous year.

23. The average cost of each successful case was Re. 0-1-8¾ against
Re. 0-1-11 9/10 in the preceding year.

Expenditure on Provincial
Vaccination

24. The total cost of the Provincial Vaccine Department for 1899-1900
amounted to Rs. 42,245-11-8 against Rs. 44,168-15-7, or
Rs. 1,923-3-11 less than that of the previous year. The
decrease is observed mainly under the heads " Travelling Allowance" and
" Establishment." The decrease under the former head is due to less travelling
allowance having been drawn by Civil Surgeons, as owing to the prevalence of
famine, their inspections were mostly restricted to the relief-camps. The decrease
under the latter head is due to the deputation of certain Native Superintendents
and Vaccinators to famine relief camps as Hospital Assistants or Compounders
for a considerable period and to a post of Native Superintendent having remained
vacant up to the beginning of the working season.

25. The average cost of each successful vaccination was Re. 0-1-9¾ against
Re. 0-2-2 in the preceding year.

Expenditure on Vaccination
in Feudatory States.

26. The cost of the Vaccine Department of the Feudatory States (exclu-
sive of Sakti) amounted to Rs. 7,496-15-0 as compared
with Rs. 6,704-13-7 (excluding Sakti) in the previous
year, or an increase of Rs. 792-1-5, due principally to the appointment of a Native
Superintendent for each of the States of Raigarh, Rerakhole and Sonepur ; the
entertainment of a clerk at Kawardha; the appointment of peons at Rerakhole
Kalahandi and Patna, and the increased expenditure on contingencies.

27. The average cost of each successful operation was Re. 0-1-5 against
Re. 0-1-3 5/7 in the previous year.

Number of operations per-
formed by Hospital Assistants.

28. The total number of operations performed by Hospital Assistants attached
to dispensaries and famine relief camp hospitals in
the Khalsa and Feudatory States (excluding Sakti, but
including Bijapur the statistics of which were not included in the previous year's
return) amounted to 24,788, or 10,712 more than in the previous year, of which
20,153 were primary and 4,635 re-vaccinations. The total number of persons
successfully vaccinated was 22,172, and of these 13,154 were infants under
one year.

29. Of the total number of operations performed by Hospital Assistants,
6,319 were carried out in hospitals attached to famine relief camps.
