SIR,

I HAVE the honor to submit statistical returns and brief notes on Vaccination in
the Madras Presidency for the official year 1888-89.

2.  Surgeon D. F. Dymott, who was in charge of the office throughout the year,
visited the districts of Tanjore, Madura, Tinnevelly, Trichinopoly, Salem, Chingleput,
South Arcot and North Arcot, and inspected the towns of Tanjore, Máyavaram,
Kumbakónam, Mannárgudi, Madura, Periyakulam, Palni, Dindigul, Tuticorin, Tinne-
velly, Palamcottah, Trichinopoly, Srírangam, Salem, Conjeeveram, Cuddalore, Chi-
dambaram, Vellore, Wálajápet, Gudiyátam and Tirupati.

3.  The strength of the vaccine establishment consisted of 33 first and 23 second-
class Deputy Inspectors of Vaccination, and 242 first and 427 second-class vaccinators
and 128 probationers, showing an increase of 2 second-class Deputy Inspectors, 1 first
and 8 second-class vaccinators and 8 probationers.

4.  In the following table the work performed during 1888-89 is contrasted with
that of the preceding year :—

5.  On the whole the outturn has been comparatively satisfactory both as regards
quantity and quality. An increase is observable in the numbers returned by all classes
of workers, except medical subordinates, other than those attached to civil dispensaries
and Native States.
