ANNUAL REPORT ON VACCINATION IN MYSORE
FOR 1879—80.
I have the honor to submit for the information of the Chief Commissioner a concise
report on Vaccination in Mysore for (the official year) 1879-80.
2. The department has undergone no change in its constitution during the year
under report.
3. The establishment consists of 84 Vaccinators to each of whom is allotted a
Taluk, or, in cases where the original Taluks have been abolished, 2 or more sub-divi-
sions of different Taluks.
4. The following abstract exhibits the work done by various agencies, the results
and the cost:—

5. It will be observed that the total number of cases operated on by Vaccinators
is 88,785 or 1,188 less than in the preceding year. The falling off which was chiefly
in the Nagar Division is shewn below :—

The decrease in the Nagar Division is ascribed in some instances to the sickness
of Vaccinators and in others to defective zeal or neglect, but it may be remarked that
at certain seasons in Malnad Taluks the climate is unfavorable to vaccination.
The slight decrease in the Ashtagram Division is accounted for chiefly by there
being for short periods no vaccination performed in the Taluks of Heggaddevankote and
Malvalli and the jahagir of Yalandur for the Mysore District and in Manjarabad, Atti-
kuppa and Narsipur Taluks for Hassan District.
6. The average number of cases vaccinated by each Vaccinator is 1,082.7 per an-
num. This is a fair amount of work considering that in some Taluks for various rea-
sons vaccination was suspended for a time.
7. Of 88,785 operations, the number returned as successful is 70,634 or 79.5
per cent of the number vaccinated. The percentage of successful operations in 1878-79
was 81.31. The cases in which the result is unknown are not taken into account, and
therefore the proportion of successful vaccinations may perhaps be higher than is shewn
in the returns. In the case of wandering tribes and of travellers generally, the result
of operations must sometimes remain unknown, and as respects permanent residents there
is also occasionally difficulty in ascertaining results from the unwillingness of certain
classes to permit of lymph being taken from their children's arms for the benefit of others.
