(3) No.3849 -

                                   No. 3849 OF 1888.

FROM

                    COLONEL H. C. A. SZCZEPANSKI,

                                                      Officiating Commissioner,

                                                                                    Hyderabad Assigned Districts,

To

THE SECRETARY FOR BERAR TO THE RESIDENT,

                                                                                                     Hyderabad.

                                                                                          DATED AMRAOTI, 10th July 1888.

SIR,

I have the honour to forward herewith a short note by Dr. Little on the
operations of the Vaccination Department during the year 1887-88.

2. The results may be thus summarized and compared with the figures of
the previous year. The total number of operations performed by the special
vaccination establishment was 90,311, against 88,266 in the previous year, being
an increase of 2,045. The average number of persons vaccinated by each vacci-
nator was 2,150, or 2.3 per cent. more than in 1886-87. Percentage of successful
cases of primary vaccination was 96.5 and in re-vaccination 45.4, against 96.2
and 19.4 respectively in 1886-87. The increase in re-vaccination is satisfactory.

3. The number of vaccine operations performed at dispensaries was 391
less than in 1886-87. Except in Amraoti, the decrease was general in all the
districts of the province. In Basim alone the decrease was 38.3 per cent.

4. The number of vaccine operations in the Melghat was 2,318 against
1,332, or 986 more than in the previous year; the percentage of successful cases,
however, was not as good as that of the last year, being 91.5 per cent., against
93.4 in 1886-87.

5. This year also, it is satisfactory to observe, there has been an appreci-
able increase in infant vaccination. The total number of children under one year
who were vaccinated was 68,104, against 63,148 in 1886-87, or in other words
there was an increase of 7.8 per cent. The proportion of vaccination to births
registered was 68.8.

6.    The expenditure of the department was Rs. 350 less than in the previ-
ous year, and the cost of each successful case was less by two pies.

7.    Except the two Superintendents mentioned in paragraph 3 of Dr. Little's
note, the Vaccination Staff appears to have worked well. The Civil Surgeons of
Basim and Wun have as usual performed their duties satisfactorily, but it is a
matter for regret that, notwithstanding the remarks made by the Resident in his
reviews on the reports for the last and previous years, the other Civil Surgeons
appear to have paid so little attention to this part of their duty, and some expla-
nation should have been demanded of the Civil Surgeons of Amraoti and Akola,
and especially of the latter, for the apparent neglect in supervising the work of
one of the departments entrusted to their care.
