Small-pox.

There was no small-pox in this district during
the season.

Conduct of vaccinators.

The conduct of the staff was good.

Head Vaccinator Mahomed Taleh, who officiated as Superintendent, is steady and
painstaking, but he lacks influence and weight with his staff.

The Superintendent of this district, Mr. Trimbak Rao, having only been appointed
at the commencement of the season, and being new to the work, accompanied me on tour
for the purpose of gaining an insight into his duties. He is an intelligent and capable
man, and will, I hope, make a good Superintendent.

Establishing lymph.

The first two supplies of animal lymph received from Akola on the 29th September
and 13th October, respectively, failed; but a third supply
received on the 18th October proving successful, both
humanized and animal lymph was propagated and distributed to each circle.

Season's work.

Out of 1,162 villages in the district, vaccination was carried on in 963, and 12,280
operations were performed against 9,753 in the pre-
vious year. Of these, 12,258 were primary and 22
secondary operations, the percentage of success, respectively, being 92.5 and 54.5. The
percentages of unsuccessful and unknown cases, 4.8 and 2.7, respectively, are lower than
those for any other district except Ellichpur.

The number of infants successfully vaccinated was 6,981, or 53.9 per cent. of annual
birth-rate, estimated at 40 per thousand of population. The average number vaccinated
by each vaccinator was 1,364, or 280 in excess of last year, which is above the average
for the province and comes next to Amraoti, compared with other districts. The total
expenditure on vaccination in this district was Rs. 2,437-14-6, and the average cost per
successful case Rs. 0-3-5, against Rs. 0-4-4 in 1879-80.

Inspection.

Work was performed in 963 villages, out of which 685 were visited, and 11,502 cases
verified, or 93.6 per cent. of the total vaccinations. Of
these the Native Superintendent verified 8,949 and
travelled 1,551 miles, or 8.5 miles per day, and the head vaccinator 506 miles, or
8.6 miles daily.

The Superintendent General examined the work in the Digras Circle, which was on
the whole good.

Attitude of the people.

No direct opposition is met with, but the Superintendent reports that much difficulty
is experienced in carrying on the work amongst the
Banjaras, of whom there are two or three hundred
tandas in the district.

Their leaders, Ramu Nayak and Shama Nayakore, are opposed to vaccination.

Conduct of vaccination staff.

The conduct of the vaccinators was good, except that of the 3rd class vaccinator
Bapu Rao Mahadeo, who was lazy and careless, and
whose work was found by the Superintendent to be
very unsatisfactory.

The Superintendent, Mr. Ajaj Hussain, is steady and hardworking. He has risen
in the department, and understands his work thoroughly, and has worked satisfactorily
during the year.
