Assistance in supervision promised.

4. It is only necessary casually to refer to my
letter No. 2000, dated 15th August 1873, to the
address of the 1st Assistant Resident, in which my views and opinions in
regard to the administration of the department I have the honor to control
are fully set forth, to show that they have been somewhat supported by the
Resident, as he places at my disposal, for a few months of the year, during
the vaccine season, the services of the Assistant Apothecary at Akolah, when
they are not required elsewhere, to assist me in checking the work of the
Superintendents of vaccination. Unfortunately, however, this year I was not
able to avail myself of the services of Mr. Apothecary Pitts, as just at the
time I required them, he was obliged to take up the appointment of an Officiat-
ing Civil Surgeoncy, the permanent incumbent having taken ill, and being
obliged to avail himself of leave.

District Superintendents' work ex-
amined by them.

5. In regard to the work of Superintendents.
They have examined a very great deal more than
in the previous year. I have therefore so much the more confidence in the
figures which appear in this, than in any previous Report.

Akolah District Superintendent.

The Superintendent, Akolah district, visited 303
of the 359 villages in which work was carried on,
and satisfied himself of the correctness of 1,838 of the 3,345 reported suc-
cessful cases.

Bassim.

The Superintendent, Bassim district, visited 186
villages out of 329 in which vaccination was car-
ried on, and verified 3,055 of the 4,996 cases recorded as " successful."

Buldanah.

The Superintendent, Buldanah district, examin-
ed the work in 283 of the 317 villages visited by
Vaccinators in his district, and proved the " success" of 2,278 of 3,122 cases
recorded as such.

Oomraotee.

The Superintendent, Oomraotee district, in-
spected the work in 263 villages, leaving 154 un-
visited, and verified 4,078 out of 6,019 reported " successful" cases.

Ellichpur.

The Superintendent, Ellichpur district, visited
212 of 214 villages in which operations were car-
ried on, and verified 3,237 out of 3,798 reported " successful" cases.

Woon.

The Superintendent, Woon district, visited 316
of 540 villages in which vaccination was perform-
ed and examined, and is satisfied with the correctness of 3,608 out of 6,231
reported " successful" cases.

The Reporter's part in supervision
of work.

6. I have not, of course, been able to examine
even some of the work performed by all the Super-
intendents. What I have done in this respect will be shown in a chapter
further on in this report; and now that the recess is come, and I will have com-
parative leisure in office, I propose, as 1 did last year, to call for some of
the Patails' forms from each circle and compare them with the returns received,
and, thus, in some way compensate for my inability to test the returns of all
the Superintendents.

Difficulties met with in working De-
partment.

7. I don't suppose any one who has not had
a department of this sort to superintend can
have any idea of the trouble and annoyance a Superintendent has to contend
against, and as I said last year, I repeat in this also, I do my best to contend
against all difficulties as they arise, and strive to promote the interest of the
department by getting as good work as I can; and, feeling satisfied on this
point, when there are failures, I do not hesitate to record them.
