lymph for which the Institute has become noted was thus
maintained. It is satisfactory to observe that the case success rate
in the Indian States 99.58 is little less than that in the Presidency
Districts. At the close of the year there was a balance of 31,067 c.c.
or 621,340 doses of lymph on hand. No new processes were adopted
in the preparation and purification of the lymph, reliance being
placed on its occasional passage through rabbits to maintain the
potency-; and on the chloroform process, which has given consistently
good results in the past, for purification. Observations on the effect
of keeping lymph for long periods in cold storage were continued
during the year.

Seed lymphs were obtained from Patwadangar, Lahore, Madras
and Trivendrum, lymphs from Belgaum being sent in exchange.

Calves.—No calf was purchased during the year.

Buffalo calves were not made use of.

Nine hundred calves were hired from the contractor as compared
with 985 during the previous year. At the commencement of the
year there were 42 calves on hand. The whole 942 were ultimately
returned to the contractor after vaccination, non remaining in stock at
the end of the year. Of the 927 calves vaccinated during the year 15
proved unsuccessful and the lymph from 9 was rejected as unfit for
use. The total lymph manufactured 102,697.25 was thus obtained
from 903 calves the yield of pulp in grammas per calf being 19.30 as
compared with 19.34 in 1926-27 and 20.08 in 1925-26.

No case of cattle disease occurred among the calves and the work
proceeded without interruption throughout the year. The practice
of testing every lymph on children before issue from the Institute was
continued, 2,065 children being vaccinated in this way.

Repairs.—Current repairs were carried out as usual by the Public
Works Department. No new buildings were added. The inner
masonry lining of well No. 3 was completed but the electrical
pump has not yet been fitted.

Administrative approval for the construction of a new rabbit
house at an estimated cost of Rs. 6,132 has been accorded by
Government in their resolution, General Department, No. 5217 dated
10th March 1927 and the work will be commenced if funds are
provided.

The following projects are still under consideration :—

(1)  Additional quarters for the staff.
(2)  A new school house.
(3)  Lecture hall.
(4)  Hostel for vaccinators and others attending the special
training class held at the Institute.

Refrigerating plant and machinery.—The working of the cold
room was satisfactory. The average maximum and minimum
temperature readings have been 9.89° F and 9.36° F respectively with
a mean of 9.62° F. The maximum temperature recorded during the
year was 13.5° F. It is proposed to instal an Electrolux or similar
apparatus as an adjunct to the cold room, for the purpose of keeping
lymph temporarily above ground.
