The high rate in Bombay City is due to defective birth registration and
to the fact that a certain number of children are brought into the city by people
who come for work. It is the custom in some cases for a woman to leave
Bombay for her delivery ; this tends to raise the rate, as the birth is not regis-
tered in Bombay; but in all probability the child is vaccinated on the woman's
return to the city.

The rates for the Central and Gujarát districts are good, especially those
for the Collectorates of Ahmednagar and Sholápur in the former, as in these the
registration of births is well carried out.

In Sind the high rates are due to defective birth registration.

Particulars of vaccine
operations.

13. The following table specifies caste, age, sex, total operations, and the
results in primary operations and re-vaccinations, by
districts and for the Army, and contrasts the totals
with those of 1897-98 :—
