Progress in the Presidency
Circle.

59. Vaccination has been carried on in Bombay City for many years
under great difficulties and disadvantages, because no
proper central building has been provided to shel-
ter the calves from which lymph is obtained. The
want of a vaccination depôt and quarters for the Superintendent has been
urged on the Municipal Commissioner year after year but without success; the
importance of this matter may be understood by the Corporation in the event
of a failure of lymph supply during an epidemic of small-pox. They cannot
plead the excuse of not having received sufficient warning of the possibility of such
a disaster occurring. The city of Bombay comprises the Presidency Circle.
It has an area of 22 square miles with a population of 773,196 persons.
It is administered by a Superintendent of Vaccination paid by Government,
who has under his orders an Assistant Superintendent, 4 clerks, 13 kárkúns,
1 head vaccinator, 7 public vaccinators, 2 assistants and 3 peons,—all paid
