Truthfulness of vaccination
registers.
It will be seen from the foregoing tables that out of the 36,838 children
inspected, the results in 27,786 instances were tested by calling their names
from registers in which there were enrolled the names of 44,452 children, of
whom 29 were vaccinated more than once on account of the failure of the first
operation. The results given by vaccinators were 41,265 as successful, 794
unsuccessful, exclusive of 29 secondary operations, and 2,393 unknown, while on
inspection they were found to be 27,076, 710 and 16,666 respectively. Exclud-
ing the " unknown " or rather the number of children " absent " at the time of
inspection from both sides, the vaccinators' figures
give the percentages of 98.04 as successful and 1.96
as unsuccessful, while the inspection figures return
them as 97.45 and 2.55. Again, out of 27,076 successful children there were
18,911, who had good cicatrices on their arms, 4,957 " middling" and 3,208
