Small-pox in
Western Gu-
zerat circle.

49. In Western Guzerat circle, Ahmedabad is the only British
zillah, and in it only is there registration. There were 177 deaths
to 388 in 1874-75, or a decrease of 211. Dr. Blomfield reports
that " small-pox did not prevail as an epidemic, except in the Lilia
" mahal of Kundla, where it commenced in February, and has
" continued to the end of the official year."

Small-pox in
Sind circle.

50. In Sind there were 48 deaths recorded by the Sanitary
Commissioner to 31 in 1874-75. Dr. Williams says he has receiv-
ed information, from his assistants and vaccinators, of 90 deaths
among 447 cases, or 22.4 per cent. of deaths to attacks, which is
not half as high as in the city of Bombay, and just little over half
the percentage in Aden.

Small-pox in
Cutch.

51. In Cutch Dr. Dorabji Hormasji says :—"Small-pox is
" not much heard of this year ; only a few solitary cases were re-
" ported by the vaccinators."

Small-pox in
Aden.

52. In Aden, Dr. Hay states, " 157 cases of small-pox were
" treated during the year : all, with a few exceptions, occurred
" during the last three and half months of the official year." 13
were imported, and the rest occurred in Aden. Vagrants were

the greatest sufferers. The deaths were 54, or 41 per cent. of
attacks. Dr. Hay is of opinion the disease was originally import-
ed from Jeddah. 36 of the attacked had been vaccinated, and 3
had suffered from the disease before.

Small-pox in
Presidency
circle.

53. In the Presidency circle, i.e. Bombay city, the deaths
during the calendar year were only 246, or 12 fewer than in the year
1874. This is the smallest number of deaths since 1862, and
only in 3 years in the last 26 have there been smaller numbers.
Through the courtesy of Dr. Weir, the Health Officer of Bombay
city, I have returns of deaths till the 30th of April 1876. In these
first four months of the year, 2,717 deaths occurred among 5,870
