ed, however, that in 1857 vaccination under Superintendents was again
increased by sixteen thousand one hundred and thirty-three (16,133).

Decrease where chiefly-
observed.

17. Upon referring to Table 1 the decrease in 1856 is seen to per-
vade all the Divisions, except the Southern
Deccan and Eastern Guzerat, in the latter of
which there was an actual increase of about three thousand (3,000). In
1857, whilst there was a falling off in all the other Divisions, there is a
remarkable and gratifying increase of twenty-five thousand two hundred
and twenty-six (25,226) in Sind. The diminution in Western Guzerat
of seven thousand seven hundred and ten (7,710) is doubtless due to
the Establishment of the Kattywar Circle, and its separation from
Guzerat.

Although numbers less,
yet per centage of success
greater.

18. Many reasons are assigned by the Superintendents for the
diminished numbers, yet the decrease is not
altogether satisfactorily accounted for in either
year, although there can be no doubt, that in
1855 an unusual large number of recorded vaccinations took place;
still, if the ratio per cent. of successful cases is examined, it will be
found to have increased each year as the total number diminished, thus
in 1855 it was 89.5, in 1856 90.6, and in 1857 91.6.

Numbers vaccinated in
1856 and 1857.

19. By Table No. 4 it will be seen that the total number vaccinated
under this Presidency during the year 1856 was
two hundred and forty-seven thousand six
hundred and twenty-nine (247,629), and of these one hundred and fifty-
eight thousand two hundred and thirty-five (158,235) were performed
under the Superintendents, fifty-three thousand six hundred and sixty-
three (53,663) by the Native Chiefs' agency, and thirty-five thousand
seven hundred and thirty-one (35,731) by Vaccinators under Civil Sur-
geons. In 1857 the total number vaccinated was two hundred and forty-
six thousand six hundred and nineteen (246,619), of these one hundred
and seventy-four thousand three hundred and sixty-eight (174,368)
vaccinations were performed by Superintendents, forty-four thousand
and thirteen (44,013) by Native Chiefs' agency, and twenty-two
thousand two hundred and thirty-eight (22,238) by Civil Surgeons.

Proportion of Sexes.

20. The proportion of each sex varied thus: the highest proportion
of males over females occurred under the Native
Chiefs' agency (92 per cent. in 1856, and 91 per
cent. in 1857), next under Divisional Superintendents (84.2 per cent.
in 1856, and about 80 per cent. in 1857), and lastly under Civil
Surgeons (73 per cent. in 1856, and 75 per cent. in 1857), the average
of all the Divisions being about 84 per cent. in 1856, and 81 per cent.
in 1857.
