                            DISPENSARIES IN RAJPUTANA.                                   9

                                               Plague.

101.  During the year from 1st April 1921 to 31st March 1922, 223 plague
seizures and 201 deaths were reported in 32 towns and villages infected in
Ajmer-Merwara District and in the Indian States in Rajputana against 855
cases with 652 deaths in 53 towns and villages in the previous year.

102.  The percentage of total plague deaths to population was 1.42 as
shown in the table attached as compared with 1.34 in 1920-21.

                            AJMER-MERWARA.

103. 4 cases with one death were reported in Ajmer City during March
1922.

                                     Indian States.

104.  Mewar.—47 cases with 41 deaths were reported in 7 villages.

105.  Sirohi.—Only one imported fatal case occurred at Ood village.

106.   Marwar.—The disease persisted from the preceding year but was
confined to Bali and Desuri Perghanas and continued till the end of April
1921. 93 cases with 91 deaths were reported in 13 towns and villages.

107.   Bharatpur.—The disease lingered from the month of February 1921
and continued till the middle of April 1921. 78 cases and 67 deaths were
reported in 10 towns and villages.

108.  All precautionary measures were taken to check the spread of the
disease.

                                        Snake bite.

109. Anti-venine is kept in stock in most of the main Dispensaries and
used for the treatment of Snake poisoning when opportunity offers. No special
report has been received on the subject.

                                     STATEMENT F.

110. This statement shows the classes and sexes of both in and out-door
patients treated in the Dispensaries of Ajmer-Merwara and of Indian States of
Rajputana. This calls for no comment, as it is merely introduced for statistical
purposes.

                                     STATEMENT G.

111. The number of surgical operations performed during the year in
Ajmer-Merwara and in Indian States was 87,747 against 77,654 in 1920 or an
increase of 10,093. The number of patients operated on was 87,742 against
77,406, the number cured was 86,535 against 76,218, the number relieved 597,
discharged otherwise 194, and died 149 as compared with 636, 203 and 98
respectively in 1920; while 267 remained under treatment at the end of
the year.

-112. Of the operations performed 2,464 were Extractions of the lens for
Cataract, of which 2,403 were reported successful, 49 Lithotomies, 151
Litholapaxies and 214 Amputations against 2,019, 48,173 and 215 respectively
in 1920.

113.  477 operations were performed on the Abdomen of which 32 proved
fatal as compared with 494 operations with 28 deaths in 1920. Of these 260
were Paracentesis of Abdomen with 11 deaths, 30 Abscess of Liver with 1
death, 23 Laparotomies with 9 deaths and 78 Radical Cure of Hernia with
3 deaths against 328 Paracentesis of Abdomen with 7 deaths, 24 Abscess of
Liver with 5 deaths, 19 Laparotomies with 7 deaths and 45 Radical Cure of
Hernia with no death in the previous year.

114.  The total number of Surgical Operations of all kinds performed in the
Ajmer-Merwara District in 1921 was 3,984 with 5 deaths against 3,836 with 4
deaths in 1920 showing an increase of 148 operations.
