12            JAILS AND MEDICAL STAFF IN RAJPUTANA.

                  FEMALE HOSPITAL AND DAI CLASS.

123. During the year no qualified Female Sub-Assistant Surgeon was
appointed to the medical charge of the female wards of the Victoria Hospital,
Ajmer, for want of funds. A Lady Doctor superintends the Mission Hospital
for women where many patients are treated.

124.  Beawar.—Female Sub-Assistant Surgeon Mrs. J. Martin was in
charge of the Female wards of the Charitable Dispensary at Beawar for only
two months and 8 days during the year, as she fell ill. From the 1st Novem-
ber 1911, Female Sub-Assistant Surgeon Pandita Sunder Lali was engaged.

125.   Native States.—The returns received from the Female Hospitals in
the Native States of Rajputana show on the whole a considerable decrease of
work done during the year which is probably due to decrease of Malarial fevers,
owing to scanty rainfall.

126.  Jodhpur.—Miss J. Marsh, M.D., was in charge of the Jaswant
Hospital for women at Jodhpur till the 9th March 1911 when she resigned her
post and her place was filled up by Miss Iles, M.D., on 1st April 1911, she
resigned on 12th September 1911. The post of Lady Superintendent remained
vacant till the 17th December 1911, when Miss B. Griffin, M.D., B.C.H.;
B.A.O., of National University of Ireland assumed charge of the hospital,
meanwhile Female Sub-Assistant Surgeon Hennah Paul was put in charge of
the hospital. There were 99 in and 2,923 out-door patients treated against
193 in and 4,718 out-door patients in the previous year, this decrease is probably
due to the changes and absences of the various superintendents.

127.  There were 92 operations performed against 377 in 1910.

128.   Udaipur.—Miss McGlasshan, M.B., Ch.B., was in charge of the
Walter Female Hospital, Udaipur, till the 28th February 1911, when she
resigned and was relieved by Female Sub-Assistant Surgeon Shitabo Bai. No
lady doctor has since been appointed and the Female Sub-Assistant Surgeon
was in sole charge of the institution. The total in-door attendance fell from
101 in 1910 to 84 in 1911 which is partly due to the absence of a qualified
Lady Doctor which greatly limits the range of useful work that can be under-
taken and partly to the outbreak of plague in Udaipur City.

129.  Alwar.—Mrs. E. S. Gaudoin was in charge of the Dufferin Hospital
at Alwar till April 1911, when she resigned her post and since then no Lady
Doctor has been appointed. Female Sub-Assistant Surgeon Bala Bai was in
sole charge of the hospital. There were 332 in and 13,650 out-door patients
treated as compared with 307 in and 11,786 out-door patients in 1910.

130.  Kotah.—Miss J. Newton, L.R.C.P. & S., has been in charge of the
Victoria Jubilee Hospital at Kotah throughout the year. There was an increase
in the total in-door attendance. An Assistant Lady Doctor, Gladys Pawnes, has
been appointed to the hospital since the 16th June 1911.

131.  The Female Sub-Assistant Surgeon is popular and liked by the women
of Kotah.

132.  Eleven pupils were admitted into the Dai class at Kotah on the 4th
July 1911; of these one left the class on the 15th August and 5 were discharged
on the 15th September for being incompetent, the remaining 5 passed their
examination on the 16th November 1911. During the course of instructions,
each Dai was paid a R5 month scholarship from the State.

133.   Jaipur.—Miss L. E. Sykes, M.D., has been in charge of the female
wards of the Mayo Hospital, Jaipur, throughout the year. There was a slight
decrease in the number of in-door patients treated owing to the outbreak of
plague in Jaipur City during the year. Operations on women were 561 as com-
pared with 569 in 1910.

134.  Bharatpur.—Female Sub-Assistant Surgeon Bibi Rup Kuar has been
in charge of the female hospital at Bharatpur throughout the year. There were
322 in and 7,315 out-door patients treated against 370 in and 8,080 out-door
patients in the previous year. A separate female hospital building has been
constructed and occupied on the 1st December 1911.

135.  Bikaner.— Female Sub-Assistant Surgeon Elizabeth Moji Ram has
been in charge of the female wards of the Bhagwan Dass Hospital at Bikaner
