Primary and secondary.

30. Of the total number, 36,513 were primary, and 1,150 secondary
operations.

Sex.

31. Of the primary operations, 22,086 were on males, and 14,427 on
females.

Caste or religion.

32. The castes of the patients were:—

Christians,... ... ...

105 or 0.29 per cent.

Hindús, ... ... ...

28,891 or 79.12 „ „

Mussulmáns, ... ...

7,274 or 19.92 „ „

Other castes, ... ...

243 or 0.66 „ „

Mussulmáns more amen-
able than Hindús.

33. The proportion of the Hindú and Mussulmán population of the
Province is 89.1 and 10.9 per cent. which shows, as would be expected
that the Mussulmáns are not so difficult to deal with in this matter as the
Hindús.

Age.

34. Only 6.402 or 17.53 per cent. of the patients were under one
year of age, and 30,111 or 82.47 per cent. were above that age.

Results of primary opera-
tion.

35. Of the 36,513 primary vaccinations, 26,905 or 73.69 per cent,
were successful, 6,630 were unsuccessful or doubtful, and results of 2,978
were unknown.

Re-vaccination.

36. One thousand one hundred and fifty persons were re-vaccinated,
and the operation was said to have been successful in 707 cases or 61.48
per cent.

Work done by each man
more than in 1870-71.

37. The average number of operations done by each man was 672.55
cases against 477 in the preceding year, showing an increase of 195.55 cases
for each man.

Work of Vaccinators.

38.    Sixteen thousand seven hundred and seventy-six operations were
done by the men paid by Government, out of which 16,434 were primary,
and 342 were secondary.

39.    The results in the primary numbers were of 12,136 or 78.72
per cent. successful, of 3,281 unsuccessful or doubtful and of 1,017 were
unknown.

40.    In the secondary vaccinations only 179 or 53.91 per cent. were
successful, 153 unsuccessful or doubtful, and 10 unknown.

Work by Vaccinators paid
from Local Funds,

41.    The district Vaccinators performed 20,449 operations, of which
19,669 were primary and 780 were secondary.

42.    Of the former, 14,389 or 81.23 per cent. were successful, 3,324
unsuccessful or doubtful and the results of 1,956 were unknown.

43.    Of the secondary operations 500 or 69.83 per cent. were success-
ful. The district Vaccinators at Sítápur, Bharaich, and Rái Barelí, appear
to have done the most work.

More than that done by
the others.
Reasons,

44. It will appear from the above that the men paid by Govern-
ment did proportionately less work than those paid from Local Funds.
This is chiefly explained by the fact that the latter were the old and ex-
perienced hands of the establishment who were better acquainted with
the mode of inducing people to submit to the operation, than the others
who were only entertained for the first time this season. Besides, the
