Re-vaccination.

7. Re-vaccinations also show a small increase but not such a large
one as in the previous year or as I should
like to see.

People readily bring their children for vaccination, especially if small-pox
is prevalent or threatened, but the utility of re-vaccination is not yet grasped
by the poorer classes.

In the settled districts the total number of persons operated on was
7 per cent. of the total population.

Appendix to Statement No. I.—Vaccination in
Political Agencies.

8. The vaccinations performed in the Agencies are not included in the
district returns in Statement No. I,
but shown in an appendix to that
statement.

The total number of persons vaccinated in the Agencies and in the
Sherani Country was 10,343, a decrease of 1,760. No record of vaccination in
the Amb State has been received for the year under report, and as last year
2,000 persons were vaccinated in this State, the decrease is accounted for.

All Civil Surgeons in the Agencies report that the people have no
prejudice against vaccination and that the relations existing between the
villagers and the vaccinating staff are good.

Appendix to Statement No. I.—Vaccination in Can-
tonments.

9. In the Cantonments of Abbottabad, Kohat, Bannu, Mardan and
Dera Ismail Khan vaccination is done
by the District staff, and the figures are
included in the district returns. In the
Peshawar Cantonment, in which a special vaccinator works, 2,817 primary and
3,122 re-vaccinations were done. At the Nowshera Cantonment Hospital 901
vaccinations were performed, of which 685 were re-vaccinations.

Statement No. II.—Cost of the Department.

10. The total expenditure was Rs. 15,235; of this Rs. 2,074 were paid
to the Punjab Central Vaccine Institute
on account of lymph and Rs. 12,890 on
up-keep of establishment. The expenditure is slightly less than in 1911-12,
due to dates on which payments for lymph were made not having been the
same each year.

This expenditure is met as follows :—From Imperial Revenues Rs. 1,644,
from Local Funds Rs. 13,190, and from Cantonment Funds Rs. 400.

Cost per successful case.

11. Out of the whole total of operations, e.g. 152,740, the number of
successful operations was 143,108, and
the cost per successful case was
Re. 0-1-8, a very low figure indeed.

Statement No. III.—Dispensary vaccination.

12. A very small amount of vaccination was done at civil dispensaries,
only three recording any. In Chitral
the Sub-Assistant Surgeon inspected the
work of the Vaccinators.

Statement No. IV.—Comparison of work done during
the past 13 years.

13. This statement shows that vaccination steadily increases. Last
year I noted that the number of success-
ful primary vaccinations was the
highest ever recorded ; the figure of last
year is again exceeded, the respective numbers being 107,123 and 120,285.

Statement No. V.—Inspections made by the officers of
the Department.

14. Throughout the Province, in settled districts and agencies combined,
the total of persons on whom primary
vaccination was performed was 123,809
and of that re-vaccinated 27,270. Civil

Surgeons found that the percentage of successful cases was 95.54 and 47.79
respectively, while Divisional Inspectors and Superintendents record a much
higher figure of success among re-vaccinations. Superintendents and Divisional
Inspectors checked 95,651 and 34,582 primary operations respectively and 22,147
and 5,541 re-vaccinations respectively.
