IN BURMA FOR THE YEAR 1933.                                     5

15.  Diets.—No change was made in the scale of diets, ordinary or
special, or in the arrangements for their inspection and distribution.
That the diet is adequate is suggested by the good general health of
the patients and by their steady gain in weight (in most cases) after
admission.

16.  Amusements, Recreation and Employment.—It being an essential
part of the treatment of mental patients to keep them amused and
mentally and physically occupied, the measures detailed in previous
reports to provide games and recreations and to give useful and
profitable employment to all patients capable of performing light work
were continued. Steps are being taken in the case of both institutions
to emphasize the fact that these institutions are hospitals and not jails
or asylums.

Statement No. VIII.

17. Finance.—The total expenditure on both institutions was

Rs. 5,06,489-12-4as compared with Rs. 5,14,350-3-4
in 1932. The decrease was partly due to reduced
contract rates for paddy and rations and partly to the exercise of strict
economy. The average cost per patient at Tadagale was Rs. 238
(Rs. 265), or Rs. 20 per mensem and Rs. 162 (Rs. 165) or Rs. 14 per
mensem at Minbu.

On the credit side the receipts from paying patients, including
municipalities, amounted to Rs. 1,84,019-1-0 (Rs. 1,73,632-5-9) which
indicates an appreciable increase. It is hoped that it will be possible,
as the result of various economies, to effect a further reduction in the
overhead charges and thus enable the capitation charges payable by
local bodies to be reduced.

Statement No. IX.

18. Staff.—The staff employed in the two institutions is shown in

Statement No. IX. The only changes in staff
during the year was the abolition, on account of
linancial stringency, of one post of Junior Deputy Superintendent and
two Senior Staff Nurses, and one European Attendant.

Statement No. X.

19. Manufactures.—The receipts and expenditure on account of
manufactures at both institutions is shown in
Statement No. X. It will be seen that the nett
profit realized during the year was Rs. 22,596-6-0 (Rs. 21,550-8-1).

20. Conclusion.—Major G. H. Fraser, I.M.S., held the post of
Superintendent, Mental Hospital, Tadagale, throughout the year,
whilst Messrs T. K. Nayar and W. Chit Tun held the posts of Senior
and Junior Deputy Superintendents up to 11th November and 30th
December 1933, respectively.
