2                        NOTE ON THE MENTAL HOSPITALS

1,149 (968 males and 181 females). At Minbu the year commenced
with 105 and ended with 100. The average was 103.08 and the largest
number confined on any one night was 106.

5.  Admissions and Discharges.—At Tadagale, the total number of
patients admitted during the year including 26 re-admissions (18 males
and 8 females) was 224 (188 males and 36 females) against 250 in the
previous year. Of these, 15 were due to hereditary predisposition, 37
had had previous attacks ; 30 were associated with sudden mental stress,
such as loss of property or relatives ; 14 with indulgence in Alcohol ; 27
were drug addicts ; Opium, Morphia, Cocaine and Cannabis Indica
constituting the principal drugs as associated factors. Acquired Syphi-
lis was responsible for 25 male patients. No ascertainable cause could
be assigned for 33 male cases, the information available in these cases
being either too meagre or no information being available at all as to
their past habits, and family history. The remaining admissions were
due to other causes. The number discharged was 146 (126 males and
20 females). Of these, 108 (96 males and 12 females) were discharged
as " Cured"; 24 (17 males and 7 females) as " Improved " and 14 (13
males and 1 female) as " Otherwise " as compared with 151 (128 males
and 23 females) discharged in 1930 and 122 (103 males and 19 females)
in 1929. The percentage of cures to admissions during the year was
16.52 as compared with 12.00 in 1930, and 6.52, in 1929. The largest
number of admissions were drawn from the cooly and cultivator class.
Of the total admissions, 109 were from Rangoon Town. Fourteen cases
of General Paralysis of the Insane were admitted during the year.

One lunatic who was wrongly sent to Minbu for admission was
subsequently admitted into the Mental Hospital, Tadagale. Two were
discharged from Minbu as " Recovered" and one as " Otherwise."

6.  Statement II.—Shows the number of Criminal lunatics confined
in the two Mental Hospitals. At Tadagale, there were 440 criminal
patients at the commencement of the year, and 443 at the end as
against 440 in 1930, and 426 in 1929. The average population of this
class of inmates in the two institutions was 541.88 against 546.21 in
1930, and 518.28 in 1929.

7.  Statement III.—The incidence of lunacy among the various races
admitted is as given below :—
