some want of room for males, who had to be kept in one of the female quarters
at night. Arrangements are being made to include this female quarter in the
male division, with slight alterations, the cost of which will be very small.
The Superintendent of the Patna Asylum reported during the year that the
male section was quite full, and suggested the transfer of 15 lunatics to other
asylums in the Province. This was sanctioned by Government, and 5 luna-
tics were sent to each of the Dullunda, Dacca and Berhampore Asylums:—

Admissions and readmissions were greater by 39. The number discharged,
however, increased by 30, and the daily average strength showed a fall of
11.47. Under the Committee's rules regarding the disposal of recovered criminal
lunatics there were only 13 discharges, against 7 in 1898. The increase took
place at Dacca. The effect of the rules varies from year to year, and although
they do not seem to have much reduced the numbers, it is perhaps premature to
judge of their merits.
